Why Travel Insurance Matters: A Practical Guide for Your Next Trip

Travellers Team·31 October 20223 min read

Flight delays, lost luggage, medical emergencies—here's why a single policy covers peace of mind.

Travel insurance is often skipped because nothing usually goes wrong. Until it does. A delayed flight strands you overnight, you need an emergency dentist abroad, your luggage vanishes, or illness forces you home mid-trip. Any of these can cost hundreds or thousands—or wipe out your savings. Proper travel insurance is cheap protection against expensive headaches.

Good travel insurance covers three main areas: trip cancellation (reimburses flights and hotels if you cancel for covered reasons), medical emergency (including evacuation if needed), and baggage loss or delay. Some policies add gadget cover or accidental damage. For international travel from Sri Lanka, annual multi-trip policies often cost less per trip than single-trip policies if you travel more than once a year.

  • Buy insurance within 14 days of your first trip payment (some exclusions apply if you delay)
  • Read what's actually covered—'adventure activities' (trekking, diving) often need extra riders
  • Declare any existing medical conditions; most policies exclude treatment for pre-existing illnesses unless declared
  • Keep receipts for everything when abroad; you'll need them to claim

Insurance feels invisible until you need it. Then it's the smartest money you spent on your trip.
