What to pack for Sri Lanka: a practical checklist

Get packing right for Sri Lanka's diverse climate and terrain with this traveler-tested checklist.
Sri Lanka's weather, terrain, and culture are wonderfully varied—and so is what you'll actually need. Packing isn't about bringing everything; it's about bringing the right things. Here's a practical guide built on what travellers use.
Essentials by season and activity
- Light, breathable layers (cotton or linen for humidity) and a light waterproof jacket or poncho for sudden showers
- Comfortable walking shoes (sturdy sandals, trail shoes) because you'll be on your feet exploring temples, towns, and natural sites
- Sun protection: high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses—the sun is intense year-round
- Modest clothing for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered); a sarong or lightweight scarf doubles as cover and souvenir
- Lightweight toiletries and any prescription medications; pharmacies exist but unfamiliar brands can be a hassle
Pack light and plan to do laundry every few days—Sri Lanka is warm, things dry fast, and local laundry services are affordable and reliable. One carry-on is often enough if you're intentional.
