What Actually Fits: A Packing Checklist for Sri Lankan Trips

Packing for Sri Lanka trips differently than you pack for Europe. The climate is tropical and humid year-round, rain can arrive suddenly even in dry season, and the sun is relentless. Here's what works in practice.
Clothing: Breathable, Quick-Dry, Modest
- Cotton and linen blends, or modern moisture-wicking fabrics. Avoid heavy denim.
- A lightweight rain jacket or packable poncho—rain showers are brief but intense.
- One pair of quick-dry trousers and one skirt/shorts for cultural sites (shoulders and knees covered in temples).
- Sleepwear and enough underwear for three days—laundry is fast and affordable everywhere.
Sunscreen above all else: high SPF, reef-safe if you're swimming. A wide-brim hat or cap and sunglasses are non-negotiable. Flip-flops for beaches and guesthouses, but bring proper walking shoes for Kandy's steep streets and forest hikes. Many travellers skip a whole suitcase just by committing to laundry every few days—locals will wash and dry your clothes overnight for almost nothing.
