Visiting India as a Sri Lankan: The Visa Essentials
Your guide to the India visa process, entry requirements, and what to expect at the border.
India is one of Sri Lanka's nearest neighbours and has always been a popular destination for travellers—whether for spiritual journeys, beach breaks, city exploration, or family visits. Getting a visa to India is generally straightforward for Sri Lankan passport holders.
How to Apply for an India Visa
Most Sri Lankans can apply for an India visa through the High Commission of India in Colombo or online via the e-visa portal. The e-visa option is popular for short tourist visits—it's faster and less paperwork-heavy than a traditional visa application. You'll fill out an online form, upload a photo and passport scan, pay the fee, and receive your approval by email.
For traditional visas, you'll visit the High Commission in person to submit your application along with documents: your passport, a completed form, two passport photos, proof of residence, and evidence of funds. Processing usually takes a few working days to a couple of weeks, depending on the time of year.
Once approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport. It typically allows multiple entries during its validity, so if you plan to pop over the border to another country and return to India, check the terms of your specific visa grant. Most tourist visas are valid for several months, giving you plenty of time to explore.
