Unpack the Mystery: What Your Airline Baggage Allowance Really Means

Travellers Team·24 November 20233 min read

Carry-on versus checked, weight versus dimensions, fees—here's how to pack without surprises.

Your booking confirmation lists a baggage allowance, but it's written in airline shorthand. Let's translate. Most airlines offer two pools: carry-on baggage (what you take on board) and checked baggage (goes in the hold). Your ticket includes specific weight or piece limits for each—often 7 kg for carry-on and 20–23 kg for one checked bag on economy flights.

The key rules to remember

  • Carry-on has size limits too—usually around 55 × 40 × 20 cm. Your laptop bag fits; your suitcase might not.
  • Checked bags are weighed at the counter. Overages cost; exact fees vary by airline and route.
  • Personal items (purse, backpack, laptop bag) are sometimes free—sometimes counted as your carry-on allowance.
  • Special items like musical instruments, sports gear, or medical equipment often have separate rules.

Before you pack, check your airline's specific policy on their website and note your allowance. A few minutes of checking saves frustration—and money—at the airport.
