Understanding airline baggage allowance: what you can pack and what it costs

Travellers Team·30 April 20232 min read

Baggage rules vary by airline and ticket type. Here's how to read the fine print and avoid surprise fees.

Every airline has baggage rules, and they can feel mystifying at first. Typically, international flights include one checked bag (usually 20-23 kg) and one carry-on bag plus a personal item. But the details matter: some budget airlines include nothing; premium cabin passengers get more; some airlines charge per bag or per kilogram over the limit.

Read your airline's baggage policy when you book — it's usually listed on the confirmation email or the airline's website. Check the weight and dimension limits for both checked and carry-on baggage. If you're flying with multiple airlines on one trip, check each one's rules; they differ.

Common baggage questions

Sports equipment (golf clubs, surfboards, bicycles) usually requires advance notice and may incur fees. Certain items are prohibited entirely (explosives, flammables, weapons). If you're unsure, contact your airline before arriving at the airport. Packing efficiently — rolling clothes, using packing cubes — maximises space. If you're regularly over the limit, buying a baggage allowance upgrade at booking is cheaper than paying overweight fees at the airport.
