UK announces new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme
The UK is introducing a digital pre-travel permit — but it won't apply to Sri Lankan passport holders, who still need a full visa.
The UK government has announced a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme — a shift toward digital borders, similar to systems already used by the US and other countries. The initial rollout replaces the Electronic Visa Waiver for GCC nationals, with further phases expected to extend the ETA to other visa-exempt nationalities over time.
One important clarification for Sri Lankan travellers: the ETA only applies to nationalities that can already enter the UK without a visa. Sri Lankan passport holders are not visa-exempt for the UK, so this scheme doesn't change anything for you — a full UK Standard Visitor visa is still required, exactly as before.
