Travelling during Avurudu: a guide to celebrating Sri Lanka's New Year on the road

Travellers Team·27 March 20233 min read

Avurudu brings colour, tradition, and a slower pace to the island. Travel during this spring season with these practical tips.

Avurudu, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, falls in mid-April and transforms Sri Lanka into a celebration of renewal and tradition. If you're travelling during this time, expect a different rhythm: many people travel to celebrate with family, some towns and cities feel quieter as locals head home, and rural areas come alive with festivities, games, and family gatherings. It's a wonderful time to experience authentic Sri Lankan culture.

Book accommodation well in advance if travelling during mid-April. Roads can be crowded as families move between cities and towns. Public holidays fall around this period, so buses, trains, and hotels fill up quickly. If you're not staying with local friends or family, guesthouses in smaller towns are often full.

How to make the most of it

Stay in smaller towns or villages to experience genuine Avurudu celebrations. Visit local markets to see traditional sweets and decorations. Be respectful of family time — many locals are focused on their own Avurudu rituals. If invited to family celebrations, do accept; Sri Lankans are warm hosts during this season. Dress modestly and show genuine interest in traditions like the oil lamp lighting, games, and special foods. Timing your trip for just before or after the peak week might give you culture without the full chaos.
