Travelling as a Family: Essential Tips for Sri Lankan Parents Abroad
Flying with kids abroad is easier than it feels—here's how to reduce stress and maximise enjoyment.
Family travel is non-negotiable for many Sri Lankan parents—maintaining connections with relatives abroad or simply giving children an international experience. Travelling with children multiplies variables (passports, health concerns, packing), but with basic planning, it's entirely manageable. Thousands of Sri Lankan families travel internationally every year; you can too.
Start with passports for everyone, including infants (they need their own). Apply weeks ahead; children's passports take the same time as adults'. Notify airlines when booking that you're travelling with children—they'll assign seats together and caution you on baggage. Pack more food than you think you'll need (familiar snacks for homesick moments); airlines provide meals but children often prefer what they know. On the flight, pressure changes can hurt ears: give children lollies, have them chew gum, or nurse a bottle during takeoff and landing.
- Choose quieter flight times (early morning, mid-afternoon) when possible; fewer disruptions mean calmer travel
- Pack a change of clothes, wipes, and medications in your carry-on; checked luggage gets delayed
- Identify a meeting point with older children in case you get separated in transit areas or large airports
- Book accommodation with kitchens or nearby food options; flexibility matters when travelling with small children
Family travel creates memories and teaches children the world is bigger than their village. A little planning turns that into joy rather than chaos.
