Traveling with Children Overseas: A Realistic Guide for Sri Lankan Families
Family travel abroad is possible—here's how to handle flights, time zones, health, and sanity.
Flying with kids is an adventure, but it's not chaos if you plan. Colombo is a family-friendly hub, and most destinations are too. The key is managing expectations, not perfecting them.
Before you fly
Book direct flights if your budget allows—layovers with kids are draining. For longer routes, an evening departure lets kids sleep. Check visa requirements early; some countries ask for extra paperwork for children (birth certificates, parental consent letters). Get travel insurance that covers family illness and disruptions.
Visit your GP or travel clinic at least 4 weeks ahead. Vaccinations matter, and a letter documenting your child's medical history is worth its weight if anyone gets ill abroad.
On the plane
- Bring more snacks and water than you think you'll need
- Download shows/movies before takeoff—in-flight WiFi is slow and often unreliable
- Carry a change of clothes for kids in your bag, not checked luggage
- Pressure changes affect ears; let kids suck sweets or chew gum
Time zones and jet lag
Kids adjust faster than adults, but they'll be grumpy. Keep a consistent bedtime routine (even simplified versions) and don't overload the first day with activities. A quiet afternoon nap matters more than seeing one more attraction.
