The Air Travel Recovery: What Global Passenger Growth Means for Regional Routes

Travellers Team·19 November 20222 min read

IATA reports strong recovery in international air traffic—more flights and choices for Asia-Pacific travellers.

In October 2022, IATA reported that global air passenger traffic rose 44.6% year-on-year, reaching 74.2% of pre-pandemic October 2019 levels. International traffic more than doubled compared to October 2021, with particularly strong growth across Asia-Pacific markets. Domestic travel in China remained suppressed by COVID restrictions at that time, but regional routes were surging.

For Sri Lankan travellers, this translated to more flights, better schedules, and stabilising prices on key regional routes. Airlines were adding capacity to Southeast Asia, the Maldives, and the Middle East—exactly the directions Sri Lankans travel. More competition and frequency mean you have more choice and better negotiating power on fares.

The recovery cycle typically benefits leisure travellers like us. Airlines expand because demand is genuine; pricing stays competitive because routes grow contestable. By late 2022, the Asia-Pacific region was becoming the fastest-growing segment, signalling that bookings for destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, and beyond would only improve.
