Thailand in December: Your Essential Getaway Playbook
December is peak season in Thailand—here's what to pack, where to go, and how to move around.
December is Thailand's golden month: cool, dry weather, and manageable crowds outside the major tourist hubs. Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai are at their best. The Thai islands are in their sweet spot—no rain, great visibility for snorkeling, and the seas are calm. Flights from Colombo are frequent and competitive; most arrive in Bangkok and branch out from there.
Practical tips for the season
- Bring sunscreen and light, breathable clothes—it's warm, even if cooler than Sri Lanka.
- Book accommodation early; December books out fast, especially beachside resorts.
- Domestic flights or overnight trains are your best way between cities. Both are affordable and reliable.
- Thai baht goes further if you exchange money in Thailand rather than before you leave.
Thailand rewards the traveller who moves slowly. A week gives you time to settle into one or two places, eat well, and actually relax. Resist the urge to tick off a checklist; Thailand is better lived than rushed through.
