Thailand Essentials for Sri Lankan Travellers: Beaches, Cities, and Everything Between

Travellers Team·20 January 20214 min read

A practical primer on navigating Thailand's mix of island paradises, bustling cities, and hill-country charm.

Thailand feels close and familiar to Sri Lankan travellers, yet different enough to surprise. The weather is similar, the food shares tropical roots, and the welcome is warm. But navigating the size and variety of Thailand—from Bangkok's controlled chaos to island beaches to northern temples—requires a basic roadmap.

The Three Thailands

  • Bangkok: Compact and manageable despite its size. The BTS Skytrain makes moving around straightforward. Grand Palace, temples, markets, and food are the draws. Two to three days is enough unless you're a city person.
  • Islands: Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui are the big three. Phuket has the infrastructure; Krabi offers beaches and limestone cliffs; Koh Samui is upscale. Quieter islands exist if you seek them.
  • North (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai): Mountains, temples, hill-tribe culture, and lower prices. November through February is ideal. Slower pace than the south.

Thailand's visa situation is simple: Sri Lankans get 30 days visa-free on arrival. The Baht is easy to handle; ATMs are everywhere and accept most cards. Transport is reliable and cheap—buses, trains, and domestic flights crisscross the country. A common mistake: trying to see everything. Pick a region or two and move slowly; rushing through Thailand is the fastest way to burn out.
