Thailand Calls: Your First-Time Traveller's Guide to Getting It Right
From visa runs to temple etiquette, here's what every Sri Lankan heading to Thailand should know.
Thailand is one of the most visited countries in Southeast Asia, and for good reason: beaches, islands, temples, food, and warmth that greets you the moment you arrive. If you're planning your first trip, a little preparation goes a long way in turning a good holiday into a great one.
Before you go
Sri Lankans typically get a visa exemption for Thailand, allowing 30 days visa-free for tourism. Check your passport validity—it must be valid for at least six months. Thai immigration has streamlined entry procedures; have your return flight and accommodation details handy, though they rarely ask to see them. Book flights and hotels in advance, especially if you're travelling during peak season from November to February. The weather is warm year-round; pack light clothing, sunscreen, and respect modest dress codes for temples.
Bangkok is the natural entry point and never boring, but don't skip the islands—Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi—or the cultural north in Chiang Mai. A typical first trip might be Bangkok for 2–3 days, followed by a beach stop. Food is affordable and world-class; street food is safe and celebrated. Learn a few Thai phrases; locals appreciate the effort. And one golden rule: show respect to the Thai royal family in public spaces.
