Sri Lanka's January Slump: What the Numbers Tell Us
Tourist arrivals fell 6.5% in January 2020 as the industry continued recovering from shock.
The tourism board reported a 6.5% year-on-year dip in visitor arrivals for January 2020, bringing the month's total to 228,434 guests. The decline reflects an industry still finding its footing after disruptions in late 2019. Russia led source markets at 16.4% of arrivals, followed by India and Ukraine.
For travellers planning 2020 trips, this is a reminder that January remains a peak season for flights and accommodation prices, even if overall visitor numbers are softer. If budget is your concern, booking now for slightly quieter periods might offer better rates than waiting.
