Sri Lanka Tops 700,000 Tourist Arrivals in 2022 Despite Economic Headwinds

Travellers Team·16 December 20222 min read

Recovery is real: Sri Lanka recorded over 700,000 arrivals in 2022, up sharply from pandemic-depressed 2021.

On 26 December 2022, Tourism Minister Harin Fernando announced that Sri Lanka had recorded 701,331 tourist arrivals between January and that date, with the full-year total expected to reach approximately 720,000. This marked a dramatic recovery from 2021's pandemic-depressed 194,495 arrivals—a gain of over 525,000 visitors year-on-year.

The recovery happened despite significant headwinds: economic crisis, fuel shortages, and negative travel advisories issued earlier in the year had deterred many potential visitors. Yet tourists came anyway, drawn by Sri Lanka's value, beauty, and resilience. December alone accounted for nearly 92,000 arrivals as the holiday season boosted numbers.

For Sri Lankan travellers, this recovery signals growing airline capacity, improving hotel availability, and renewed investment in tourism infrastructure. When your country is a travel destination again, it invests in airports, routes, and transport—benefits that flow to outbound travellers too. More flights, better services, and competitive pricing often follow genuine tourism recovery.
