Sri Lanka Targets India for Travel Bubble Arrangement

Travellers Team·1 February 20212 min read

Tourism authorities pursue a travel bubble partnership with India, an essential source market for visitors.

As Sri Lanka rebuilds international tourism following its January 2021 reopening, tourism authorities are pursuing a travel bubble arrangement with India. The move reflects a strategic focus on India as a key source market for visitors during the pandemic recovery period.

Travel bubbles simplify movement between two countries by streamlining health protocols and entry procedures for citizens of both nations. For Sri Lanka, a bubble with India is logical: geographical proximity, established travel routes, cultural and family connections, and a large potential visitor base. Such arrangements typically require both countries to meet comparable health standards and to agree on testing and quarantine protocols.

If a travel bubble is established, Indian visitors might face simplified entry procedures, and Sri Lankan travellers heading to India could benefit from similar ease. Watch official tourism announcements from the SLTDA and the Indian Ministry of Tourism for updates. Such arrangements can take months to negotiate and implement, but they significantly boost tourism once active.
