Sri Lanka's Tourism Development Authority confirmed final 2022 figures: 719,978 tourist arrivals for the full year. This represented a gain of over 525,000 arrivals compared to 2021's pandemic-depressed 194,495, confirming that recovery was not a fluke but a genuine rebound driven by returning demand and reopening routes.
December alone accounted for 91,961 arrivals, proving that the holiday season had delivered as expected. The year-end surge reflected both improved tourism confidence and the practical reality that Sri Lanka had reopened as a genuine destination again. Airlines had restored frequencies, hotels had reopened, and the tourism economy was functioning.
For outbound Sri Lankan travellers, these numbers meant one thing: investment and capacity. Airlines, hotels, and transport providers across the region were expanding to meet rising demand. More flights, better schedules, competitive pricing, and improved services followed genuine recovery. The tourism industry that welcomed 720,000 visitors to Sri Lanka in 2022 also carried Sri Lankans out to the world with improving choice and pricing.
