Solo Travel as a Sri Lankan: Building Confidence and Staying Safe

Travellers Team·10 January 20233 min read

You don't need permission or a companion to explore the world—here's how to go it alone confidently.

Solo travel remains unusual for many Sri Lankans, especially women and younger travellers, but the barriers are mostly in the mind. Millions of people travel alone every year—you have infinitely more access to information and community than previous generations. Starting solo doesn't require courage you don't have; it requires planning and the decision to begin.

Start close. A long weekend in Southeast Asia (Bangkok, KL, Bangkok, Bali) is manageable for a first solo trip. Book a flight, accommodation in a central location (near public transport), and a rough itinerary. Tell someone trusted where you're going and check in occasionally. Use online communities (Facebook groups, Reddit) to learn from other Sri Lankan solo travellers who've gone before—their experiences and warnings are gold. Stay in hostels or well-reviewed hotels; both offer community and security.

  • Keep a photocopy of your passport separate from the original; leave a copy with family too
  • Register with your nearest embassy before departure (most have online systems); they'll contact you if emergency strikes at home
  • Join group tours or activities for specific days; solo doesn't mean lonely, and group day-trips give you companions without commitment
  • Trust your instincts: if someone or a situation feels off, remove yourself. Better awkward than unsafe

Solo travel is the purest form of learning who you are and what the world contains. Every journey starts with a single booking.
