Singapore Layover: The Smart Traveller's Guide
A few hours in Singapore? Here's exactly what's worth doing—and what to skip.
Singapore's Changi Airport is one of the world's best, and you'll want to arrive early just to explore it. But if you have a layover of 8+ hours and a valid passport, leaving the airport opens up surprising possibilities. Singapore is compact, efficient, and everything is walkable or reachable by clean, modern transport.
- 6–8 hours: Grab a meal at a hawker centre near the airport (authentic, cheap, fast), browse the airport's Gardens by the Bay display, rest
- 8–12 hours: Take the MRT into the city, visit Gardens by the Bay or Marina Bay Sands, enjoy a meal, return to airport—all doable
- 12–16 hours: Explore Chinatown, visit the National Museum, catch sunset from a rooftop bar, enjoy chilli crab at a local restaurant
- 16+ hours: Stay overnight; Singapore is worth a proper visit and a good hotel day rate lets you nap before your next flight
Logistics matter: Most Sri Lankans get a 90-day visa waiver; confirm before you land. The MRT is brilliant and cards are easy to buy at the airport. Food is incredible and cheap—skip airport restaurants entirely. And download the TransitLink app for seamless metro navigation.
