Passport renewal is a one-time task—here's how to do it smoothly and avoid last-minute stress.
Your Sri Lankan passport is valid for 10 years (or 5 years for children under 2). If it's expired or expiring within six months, you'll need to renew before most countries will let you in or out. The process is straightforward if you know the steps and give yourself time—don't wait until two weeks before your flight.
Visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration's office in Colombo or your nearest regional office. Bring your current passport, a birth certificate (or copies), two recent colour passport-sized photos, and completed application forms (available on the spot). The staff will guide you through submission. Processing takes roughly 5–7 working days for a normal renewal, though expedited options exist if you're in a hurry (expect to pay extra).
