Plan Ahead for the Holiday Rush: Your December Getaway Checklist
Christmas and New Year travel fills fast—here's when to book and what to sort before you go.
The festive season is when Sri Lankans travel most, whether escaping to mountain cool or beach warmth. If Christmas and New Year travel is on your mind, now is the time to lock in your plans. September and October are when fares stay reasonable and seats are still plentiful—wait until November and you'll fight crowds for every flight and hotel.
Start with dates. December 20 onwards books hard, and New Year's Eve itself is almost always sold out on popular routes. Consider departing mid-December to sidestep peak congestion, or aim for January 2–5 for quieter travel and better availability. Next, sort your documents: check if your passport has at least six months' validity (many countries insist on it), renew if needed, and confirm any visa requirements well ahead—visa processing doesn't happen overnight.
Book your flights and accommodation together once your dates are firm. During holidays, good hotels vanish within days of strong demand starting. Arrange travel insurance while you're at it—it covers trip delays, medical emergencies, and cancellations, all genuine concerns when travel peaks. Book a seat on your flight, pack a checked bag allowance if needed, and confirm any transfer arrangements.
The festive rush is worth it for a proper break. Plan now, travel happy, and leave the last-minute stress to others.
