Navigate CMB Like a Local: Your Colombo Airport Survival Guide
Bandaranaike International is your gateway—here's what to expect and how to move smoothly.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 30 km north of Colombo, and most international flights to Sri Lanka funnel through here. Arrival is straightforward: immigration, baggage claim, customs, then you're out. The reverse—departing—requires more patience; arrive 3 hours early for international flights to clear check-in and security comfortably.
Practical navigation tips
- Taxis and ride-sharing: Uber and Uber Eats operate; pre-book a ride or use the official taxi stand at arrivals.
- Currency: Exchange money in the airport terminal if you need cash (rate is fair), or use ATMs.
- Lounge access: If you have business-class or premium credit cards, lounges exist but aren't lavish.
- Departure: Go early. Check-in queues can be long, especially during peak season (Dec–Jan, July).
CMB is well-organized for a regional hub. Keep your itinerary and documents handy, allow buffer time for queues, and don't be rushed by crowds. Most travellers clear the airport without drama if they plan for realistic timings.
