Money and Currency: Travel Smarter, Spend Wiser

Travellers Team·20 February 20213 min read

The practical realities of carrying cash, using cards, and managing currency abroad.

Handling money abroad is simpler than most travellers expect, but a few wrong moves can sting. The goal is straightforward: access your money when you need it, minimize fees, and understand exchange rates. Most travellers use a combination of cash and cards, and that strategy usually works best.

Cash, Cards, and Strategy

  • ATMs are your best friend. Withdraw cash in the local currency at airport ATMs or bank ATMs in your destination. The exchange rate is better than airport money changers.
  • Notify your bank before travelling. Many cards block transactions outside your home country by default. A quick call or app notification prevents your card from being declined mid-trip.
  • Use credit cards for larger purchases (hotels, flights, restaurants). Debit cards are riskier abroad; if compromised, it's your account balance at risk, not a credit limit.
  • Carry a small amount of the destination currency before you leave (optional). Exchanging a few hundred rupees at your home bank helps you get from the airport to your hotel without hunting for an ATM.

Exchange rates fluctuate daily, but don't obsess over them. Using ATMs gives you the mid-market rate without markups, and that's as good as it gets for the traveller. One more tip: split your money sources. Carry cards and cash separately. If one is lost or stolen, you're not stranded.
