Managing Money Abroad: Currency, Cards, and Cash Tips

Travellers Team·10 November 20223 min read

Carry the right mix of cash, cards, and know-how to avoid exchange-rate surprises while travelling.

The money question haunts every trip: What should I carry? How much cash? Will my card work? Foreign exchange rates, ATM fees, and card charges can silently eat 10–15% of your budget if you're not careful. A little planning saves real money and, more importantly, eliminates the stress of wondering whether you can afford dinner.

Carry a mix: mostly cards, some emergency cash. A credit or debit card issued by a Sri Lankan bank is your backbone—use it for hotels, flights, and big purchases. ATMs abroad usually offer the real interbank exchange rate, far better than money-changer rates, so withdraw local currency in reasonable amounts as you need it rather than pre-exchanging large sums at home. Notify your bank before you travel (fraud prevention); most Sri Lankan banks don't charge ATM fees abroad, though your receiving bank might.

  • Carry USD 200–300 cash as backup; it's accepted almost everywhere and exchanges easily if you get stuck
  • Avoid airport money changers unless you're in a tight spot; rates are always worse than city ATMs or banks
  • Use credit cards for large purchases and hotels; debit cards for ATM withdrawals and small merchants
  • Never exchange money on the street, and don't feel pressured to change a large amount at the first offer

Smart money handling means more cash left for what actually matters: experiences, food, and memories.
