Kuala Lumpur, the Petronas Towers, beaches, street food—here's how to make the most of a Malaysian trip.
Malaysia sits close to Sri Lanka and offers plenty of variety. Kuala Lumpur is your hub—easily reached from Colombo, with good hotels and food at reasonable prices. From there, you can branch to Penang (beaches and heritage), Langkawi (island escape), or the tea highlands of the Cameron Highlands. The language barrier is low; English is widely spoken.
Where to focus your time
- Kuala Lumpur: Modern city, the iconic Petronas Towers, excellent street food (try the laksa).
- Penang: Historic Georgetown (UNESCO site), beach-side dining, laid-back vibe.
- Langkawi: Island resorts, water sports, duty-free shopping if that appeals.
- Cameron Highlands: Cool hill station, tea plantations, a break from the heat.
A week is comfortable for Malaysia. Flights are short, buses between cities are cheap and frequent, and the food is exceptional. Go hungry and come back happy.
