Malaysia for Sri Lankan travellers: what to see and how to get there
Malaysia offers culture, nature, and urban energy in a compact package. Here's how to plan your visit.
Malaysia, just across the sea from Thailand, is another wonderfully accessible neighbour for Sri Lankan travellers. Kuala Lumpur is the obvious entry point — a modern, multicultural capital with world-class shopping, street food, and the iconic Petronas Towers. But Malaysia's appeal goes beyond the city: peninsular Malaysia has tea plantations and hill stations in the interior, while East Malaysia (Borneo) offers jungle trekking and wildlife.
Most first-time visitors spend 5-7 days in KL and the nearby Klang Valley, then venture to the Cameron Highlands for cool mountain air and tea estates, or head to Penang for culture and food. The country is well-developed for tourism and easy to navigate by bus, train, or domestic flight. Accommodation and food are inexpensive.
Getting there and staying
Flights from Colombo to KL are short — 3-4 hours — and regular. Visas are usually granted on arrival for Sri Lankan tourists (check current requirements). Malaysia is predominantly Muslim with significant Hindu and Buddhist communities, so it's culturally diverse. Respect Ramadan if you travel during that month; some restaurants close during daytime fasting hours, though tourist areas stay open. The country is very safe, English is widely spoken, and food is exceptional — Indian, Chinese, Malay, and fusion cuisines coexist.
