Kandy Esala Perahera 2026: dates, phases and how to plan your visit
Ten nights of drummers, dancers and tuskers from 18–28 August — the 2026 schedule, and how to make the festival work as a traveller.
The Kandy Esala Perahera — Sri Lanka's grandest pageant, held in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic — returns from 18 to 28 August 2026. Ten nights of Kandyan drummers, whip-crackers, fire dancers and caparisoned tuskers wind through the streets around the Temple of the Tooth, building night by night to the great finale.
The 2026 schedule
- Kumbal Perahera: 18–22 August — the quieter opening nights, best for families
- Randoli Perahera: 23–27 August — the processions grow grander each night
- Grand Randoli finale: Thursday 27 August, setting off at dusk (about 6:43pm)
- Day Perahera: 28 August — the closing daylight procession
Planning it like a local
Kandy accommodation sells out weeks in advance for the Randoli nights, and the procession route closes to traffic from late afternoon — plan to be in position early. Reserved balcony and pavement seating is sold along the route; free spots exist but fill hours ahead.
