India is often the first overseas trip for Sri Lankan travellers—it's geographically close, culturally connected, and endlessly varied. Getting there is easier than you might think.
Visa options
Sri Lankans can apply for an e-Visa online (valid 60 days, multiple entry, processed in 4 days) or a traditional visa through the Indian High Commission in Colombo. The e-Visa is faster and cheaper. For longer stays, the High Commission visa is more flexible. Processing takes 3-5 working days if you apply in person.
Practical tips
- Learn a few Hindi or local phrases—Indians appreciate effort and it opens doors
- Haggle in markets but not in restaurants or fixed-price shops
- Stomach adjustment takes 2-3 days; eat at popular local restaurants, avoid ice and tap water
- Domestic flights are cheap and reliable—booking Indigo or Air India saves time between regions
