India Travel for Sri Lankans: Closer Than You Think

India feels both familiar and wonderfully foreign to Sri Lankan travellers. Geography alone—the short flight to Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore, the land crossing via Rameswaram—makes it one of the most accessible destinations from the island. And unlike many countries, the visa process is straightforward.
You'll need an Indian tourist visa, which you can apply for online (e-visa) or through the embassy in Colombo. The e-visa is faster and simpler if you're planning a standard visit: fill the form, pay the fee, and receive approval by email within days. You'll need a valid passport, a recent photograph, and proof of travel plans. The entire process takes under two weeks, often just a few days.
A few practical notes: register your address in India upon arrival (technically required, though enforcement varies by region). Bring cash—while cards work in cities, smaller towns and local markets still run on rupees. And if you're traveling overland via the Rameswaram bridge, the Indian border officials are accustomed to Sri Lankan visitors, so the crossing is usually calm and efficient.
