Gateway to Southeast Asia: Your Thailand Travel Essentials
Thailand remains the most accessible Southeast Asian escape for Sri Lankans—here's how to plan it right.
Thailand is the natural first choice for Sri Lankans exploring Southeast Asia. Bangkok is 5–6 hours by direct flight from Colombo, daily flights keep costs manageable, and the country opens to visitors easily: most Sri Lankans get a 30-day visa exemption on arrival. Hotels, food, and transport are affordable by global standards, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
Decide what draws you. Bangkok offers urban energy, temples, night markets, and riverside dining. Chiang Mai gives you mountain scenery, craft workshops, and a slower pace. The islands (Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi) deliver beaches and diving. You can comfortably fit Bangkok and one other region into a 7–10 day trip. Domestic flights are cheap; trains are atmospheric but slow. October through November is ideal—cool, dry, and the rainy season is fading.
- Book accommodation in advance during October–April (cool season); you can be flexible June–September
- Download Grab (like Uber) for safe, transparent taxis in cities; it's far cheaper than negotiating tuk-tuks as a visitor
- Eat street food fearlessly—it's usually fresher and safer than it looks, and cost almost nothing
- Respect temple etiquette: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes, don't touch Buddha images
Thailand rewards both rushed weekend trips and leisurely month-long stays. Whether your first visit or your fifth, something new waits in its food, people, and light.
