Flying With Family: Smart Tips for Sri Lankan Parents Crossing Borders
From timing your flights to packing smart, here's how to make family travel smoother, not harder.
Travelling with children changes everything—but it doesn't have to be stressful. Whether you're taking toddlers to visit grandparents overseas or teenagers on an adventure, a little planning transforms the experience from chaotic to manageable.
Before the flight
Book flights that align with your kids' sleep patterns if possible. Early morning flights often mean sleepy cooperation; evening flights let them play during the day. Pack entertainment—tablets, books, activities—but save some surprises for during the flight itself. Bring enough snacks and drink bottles (fill after security), and pack medications, comfort items, and a change of clothes in your carry-on. Confirm baggage allowances; kids' seats and strollers usually don't count, but check your airline's policy.
At the airport, arrive early so kids feel less rushed. Let them move around; a running child is often calmer during boarding. On the flight, keep the cabin crew informed if you need help, and don't stress if your toddler cries—every parent on board understands. At your destination, build in rest days. Jet lag hits kids hard; adjustment takes time. The trip isn't a race—slow down and enjoy it.
