First Time at Colombo Bandaranaike Airport? Here's What Actually Happens

Travellers Team·10 May 20223 min read

A practical guide to navigating BIA: what to expect, how to get into the city, and what won't stress you.

Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is modern, clean, and surprisingly straightforward. It's about 30 km north of the city, and you have realistic options to get into town. Here's what first-timers should know before arriving.

Arrivals: What to expect

Immigration is usually quick unless you're in a tour group wave. You'll get your passport stamped (no visa required for tourists from most countries for up to 30 days). Baggage claim is well-organized. There's a currency exchange desk if you need rupees, though ATMs are more convenient—find them just past customs. SIM cards and top-up vouchers are sold at kiosks near the exits.

Getting into Colombo

  • Pre-booked driver or hotel transfer—most reliable, especially for first arrivals at odd hours
  • Grab (like Uber)—available from the airport, straightforward, fixed pricing
  • Airport buses—cheapest but less convenient if you have luggage

The city is 30-45 minutes away depending on traffic. Note that Colombo itself is mostly business and dining; most beaches and activities need you to go south to Negombo, Hikkaduwa, or further down the coast.

Departures: Plan ahead

Arrive 3 hours early for international flights—it's policy and it works smoothly. Check-in, security, and passport control all move steadily. The departure area has decent food (local and international), duty-free shops, and power points if your layover is long.
