Family Travel: Flying with Kids from Sri Lanka
Holidays with children are memories in the making—make the flight part of that, not a battle.
- Book aisle seats with kids under 7; you'll need bathroom access and an easier path to calm them if needed
- Bring empty bottles/sippy cups to fill after security; hydration makes a huge difference in comfort and sleep
- Download shows, audiobooks, and games weeks in advance; relying on aircraft wifi is frustration waiting to happen
- Pack a 'surprise bag': small toys, colouring books, and snacks kids have never seen before—better than any screen for novelty
- Request children's meals at booking (airlines usually offer them; they arrive earlier and kids eat better when food feels special)
During the Flight
Manage expectations with older kids beforehand—explain why ears pop, why the bathroom is tiny, why turbulence is normal. Younger children do better when you normalize the strangeness. Walk the aisles when kids get restless (the crew expects this; you're not bothering anyone). If your child is anxious about flying, the time to address it is weeks before, not at the gate.
After landing, expect jetlag chaos regardless of how well the flight went. Don't schedule important activities the first day; let everyone adjust to the new time zone. A calm first 24 hours abroad sets the tone for the whole trip.
