Ella and the Nine Arches Bridge: a hillside journey through Sri Lanka's tea country

Ella is a small hill station in Badulla District, famous for its lush green surroundings, cool climate, and the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. The bridge — built during the colonial era for the railway — is an engineering marvel and a photographer's dream, especially during early morning mist. Many visitors walk the tracks to capture the bridge from different angles.

The village itself is quiet and walkable, with guesthouses, cafes, and hiking trails dotting the area. Stay a night or two to fully absorb the atmosphere. Hiking to Ella Rock or through the surrounding tea plantations gives you perspectives of the landscape that a quick visit won't provide. The train journey to or from Ella is equally memorable — sitting on the observation carriage as you wind through the highlands is a travel experience in itself.

Getting there and timing

Ella is accessible by train or bus from Kandy or Colombo. The train journey is scenic but slow; the bus is faster but winding. Visit during the clearer months (January–March or August–September) for the best views; the mist adds romance but can obscure photography. Bring layers — the highlands are significantly cooler than the coast.
