Economy, Business, First Class: which cabin makes sense for your trip?

Travellers Team·3 May 20233 min read

Cabin classes offer different experiences and price points. Here's what each offers and how to decide.

International flights typically offer economy, business, and sometimes first class. Each represents a different level of service, comfort, and price. Economy is the standard: narrower seats, basic meals, limited baggage. Business-class seats recline into beds on many long-haul flights; meals are à la carte, lounges are included, and you board first. First class (less common on regional airlines) adds private suites, premium bedding, and white-glove service.

The price difference is substantial — business class can cost 4-8 times economy, and first is even steeper. For short flights (under 4 hours), economy is perfectly acceptable. For long-haul flights (10+ hours), many travellers upgrading to business value the sleep and arrival in a less-exhausted state.

How to think about cabin choice

If you're travelling for leisure and budget is tight, economy is fine. If you're flying overnight to an important meeting or event and sleeping well beforehand matters, consider premium economy or business if your budget allows. If you're a frequent flyer, earning miles and using them for cabin upgrades is a smart strategy. Some airlines offer 'premium economy' as a middle ground: more legroom and better meals than economy but less expensive than business.
