Economy, Business, First: Choosing Your Cabin Class

Travellers Team·13 August 20214 min read

From seat width to meal service, here's what actually changes between classes—and whether the upgrade is worth it.

The three main cabin classes—Economy, Business, and First—aren't just about fancy seating. Each tier offers different combinations of seat space, amenities, check-in speed, and meal quality. Understanding what you're paying for helps you decide if an upgrade makes sense for your trip.

What you get in each class

Economy is the standard. You get a seat, baggage allowance, standard meals on longer flights, and onboard entertainment. Seats are narrower, legroom is modest, and amenities are basic—but you reach your destination on the same aircraft. Business class means wider seats, better meals, priority boarding, and usually a lie-flat bed on long-haul flights. First class, where available, adds even more exclusivity: premium bedding, à la carte dining, spa amenities, and often driver service to the airport. Not all airlines offer First; many only run Economy and Business on regional routes.

The real question isn't the class itself—it's whether the comfort gain justifies the price. A two-hour flight might not need Business, but a 15-hour journey could be worth it. Think about your priorities: do you value extra legroom, better food, or the ability to sleep well before an important meeting?
