Dubai Stopover: Making the Most of a Few Hours (or a Day)

Travellers Team·28 January 20204 min read

Three practical ways to spend a Dubai layover—from quick walkabouts to overnight escapes.

If you're flying through Dubai—and most Sri Lankan travellers do—you've got a choice: sit in the airport lounge or step into one of the world's most surreal cities. Depending on your layover length, here's what makes sense.

Three to Six Hours: Stay Close to the Airport

Dubai's airport itself is vast enough to absorb an afternoon: shower facilities, prayer rooms, quiet zones, and decent cafés. If you want to actually *see* Dubai with a short window, head to the Gold Souk in Deira (15 minutes from the airport, walkable from the metro). It's authentic, chaotic, and feels nothing like the glitzy downtown. Grab Arabic coffee and gold or spices, then return calmly.

Eight Hours or Longer: Catch the City

Metro into downtown, walk the Dubai Mall perimeter and Burj Khalifa plaza (free to admire, paid to enter), then loop back through the Old Town towards the waterfront. If you have twelve hours or an overnight, a beachside dinner in Jumeirah or a desert dinner tour gives you the Dubai story without exhaustion. Always check visa-free entry rules—many nationalities can enter visa-free for 30 days, which covers a quick layover.
