Cabin Class Decoded: Economy, Business, and What Each Offers
Not sure what you're paying for when you book premium? Here's what cabin classes actually include.
Airlines package flights into cabin classes—broad categories that bundle seat, meals, baggage, and services. Economy is the standard; business and first-class offer more space and perks. On short flights (under 4 hours), the difference in comfort is modest. On longer journeys, especially international routes from Colombo, the choice matters more for your wellbeing.
What you typically get in each
- Economy: Standard seat (around 17–18 inches wide), basic meal, carry-on + checked baggage.
- Premium Economy: Wider seat (20 inches), better meals, extra baggage, priority boarding.
- Business: Flat or lie-flat seat, gourmet dining, lounge access, priority everything, often includes checked baggage and seat selection.
The upgrade cost is real, but so are the perks—especially on overnight flights where a proper bed makes a difference. If you're flying long-haul, premium economy is often the sweet spot: meaningful comfort without the business-class price tag.
