Avurudu—the Sinhala and Tamil New Year—falls in mid-April. If you're planning a trip to Sri Lanka to experience the festival, or if you're flying out from Colombo during this period, you'll encounter full planes, packed hotels, and celebrations everywhere.
Travel during Avurudu
Hotels book out months ahead; if you're coming to experience the festival, reserve 4-5 months early. Flights from Colombo are packed—Sri Lankans abroad return home, and tourists book in to see the celebrations. Prices are at their highest. Expect delays at immigration and airport congestion.
On the other hand, the island feels alive. Families gather, streets overflow with people, traditional games (hopscotch, swing games) fill public spaces, and food markets explode with sweets and fireworks light the sky. Hotels organize Avurudu parties and meals. It's chaotic, joyful, and genuinely memorable.
Flying out during Avurudu
If you need to fly internationally during this period, book early and arrive extra early to the airport. Check-in queues are longer, and flights are fuller, meaning tighter connections. If you're transiting through a hub (Dubai, Doha), give yourself extra buffer time.
