Critical fuel shortages forced Sri Lanka's airlines to rethink routes. Here's how it affected travellers.
As of late June 2022, the jet fuel shortage at Bandaranaike International Airport had reached a critical point. Airlines were told to either carry enough fuel for return trips or add technical refuelling stops. For passengers, this meant longer flight times and unexpected delays.
SriLankan Airlines, which operates most domestic and regional routes, faced the hardest pressure. The airline drew down its fuel reserves and warned of possible cancellations. If you had a booking on any carrier out of Colombo, flexibility became your best friend.
