Airline funds locked globally: what it means for travellers

Travellers Team·25 May 20232 min read

Governments worldwide are holding up airline revenues, affecting service and connectivity. Understanding the issue helps explain flight changes.

IATA, the International Air Transport Association, reported in April 2023 that governments around the world were blocking approximately $2.27 billion in airline funds — a concerning 47% increase from the prior year. These are revenues that airlines have earned but cannot repatriate or access, often due to currency restrictions or regulatory holds in specific markets. For airlines, blocked funds constrain investment, reduce route expansion, and threaten the connectivity that travellers depend on.

What does this mean for you as a traveller? Airlines operating in affected markets may reduce flights or suspend unprofitable routes. Investment in fleet maintenance and upgrades can slow. Over time, reduced airline competition can lead to higher fares. While the issue is complex and geopolitical, staying aware of these trends helps explain why some routes get dropped or flights become less frequent.
